About our School

Tomás Rivera Elementary School opened as RUSD’s 26th elementary school on September 7, 1995 and is the first Riverside school to be named after a citizen of Riverside. Tomás Rivera was born in Crystal City, South Texas on December 22, 1935. As a prolific writer of Spanish literature, many of his writings document the experiences that he underwent and witnessed while traveling with his family as a migrant farm worker. He received a degree in English, taught in high school and received a Ph.D. in Romance Literatures. Additionally, he was Executive Vice President of the University of Texas, El Paso, as well as Chancellor of the University of California, Riverside (UCR). He served as UCR's Chancellor for 5 years until his death on May 16, 1984.

Instructional Programs: Regular Education programs include the following: Rivera serves students in grades Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through sixth grade on a traditional calendar school schedule.Special Education programs/services include the following: Non-Severely Handicapped Special Day Classes(NSH/SDC) for preschool students and Kindergarten• A Resource Specialist Program (RSP): Students who qualify for this program receive instruction according to their IEP goals. • Speech and Language: Students with IEP goals for speech and language receive therapy from a certified Speech and Language Pathologist.

School Awards and Honors: • California Distinguished School in 2006, California Distinguished School Honorable Mention in 2004. PTA Awards: 2008/2009 Early Bird and Chairman's Club Award, 2009/2010 Early Bird and Chairman's Club Award Academic Performance Index (API).
